Artist Statement
The Art of Self Expression was the way I described my new interior design business over twenty-five years ago, and it continues to describe my artistic journey today.
I am a child of the Hakka People, known in China as the “wandering tribe.” My ancestors moved from north China to Hong Kong and throughout the colonies of the British Commonwealth, finally settling in distant places like Jamaica where I was born. In time, my parents left their comfort zone in Jamaica, uprooting themselves to come to America in search of education, opportunity and limitless possibilities for their five children.
As an artist, I sense my ancestors, always pressing me forward into the unknown. For me, art is a leap into that void, a wandering in the mysterious regions of my inner landscape. It is a journey in search of those moments when fear passes and all is quiet. In that moment, I discover that deep inner place where the drawing or painting begins to have a life of its own.
I have been painting for the last ten years after moving from New York to Palm Beach County. I have studied painting with James Burge, and with Steven Assael and Graham Nixon in the Master’s Workshop Program at the Armory Art Center. I continue to study with Dennis Aufiery at the Armory.
